Beryl Colours: A Simplified Introduction

A concise visual tour through selected colour varieties of beryl and the principal chromophores associated with their appearance.

Scientific note

The video presents selected examples rather than an exhaustive classification. On-screen ion labels are simplified: emerald may be coloured by Cr³⁺ and/or V³⁺, while iron-related mechanisms in aquamarine, heliodor, and green beryl can vary. Visual appearance alone cannot establish identity or determine a chromophore; spectroscopy and chemical analysis may be required.

The preferred terms are “vanadium-bearing beryl” and “red beryl”; “bixbite” is retained only as a historical name and is discouraged in current usage.
